Wing Fighter
what are my chances of becoming a pilot of a fighter helicopter or fixed wing plane?
i am currently still in high school but since i was in early elementary school ive wanted to become a pilot. i am in very good physical condition, one of the best if not the best in my class. i am above average in school around a 3 GPA and my eyesight correction is -1.75 but correctable. i dont know what else to put up that would be useful information, but try to make a educated guess with what i have said if you can.
I'll address the helicopters part of your question since that's what I know more about. You'll need to become an officer to fly, either warrant or commissioned. Warrants go through the Warrant Officer Flight Training program (WOFT) and getting a slot is very difficult. Commissioned officers get branched Aviation (if they're both good enough and lucky enough) after completing ROTC after getting their 4-year college degree (to the best of my knowledge Officer Candidate School, the other commissioning source, does not have any Aviation slots currently allocated to them).
A 3.0 GPA is highly unlikely to get you a slot in the High-School-to-Flight-School program that warrants can earn, so that leaves you with some limited options.
1) Go to college, get a high cumulative GPA while earning your bachelors degree, and excel in your ROTC program and get branched Aviation during your senior year. It's part luck, part personal hard work determining your branch because you compete against every other ROTC cadet in the country for the same branching slots.
2) Enlist and after a few years of service you can try to go to Warrant Officer Career College (being in an aviation-related MOS should help) and get to flight training that way.
Whatever you do, definitely get those eyes fixed now, the most you can be is -1.50 and 20/40 correctable to 20/20. Go to the Lyster Army Medical center website and do a search for the paperwork you'll need to have the Lasik/PRK surgeon fill out for you. The 2 pages you need are the Corneal Refractive Surgery Checklist for Eye Care Provider. It should be the 2nd option on the search result list titled For Non-Aviatiors (ignore that), the last 2 pages at the bottom once the link opens. The rest of that packet is for people already in the Army asking the Army to pay for it.
Keep in mind that the Army has the 'lowest' requirements (plus the largest air fleet) to get into flight training and that is extremely relative as all flight slots are notoriously difficult to earn. Being a pilot is the job most people would jump at if given the chance so it is highly competitive no matter where you go. To get in you need to dedicate yourself to learning and making yourself the best officer you can be. Otherwise you don't stand a shot. Best of luck to you, if this is what you want, make it happen.
